What is a… Universal Frequency?

To begin this post, a line from Douglas Adam’s book The Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy:

Space is big… no BIG… really, really BIG… you think popping down to the shops is a long way… but that’s peanuts compared to Space.

Next, a true story from Deb & Ed Shapiro’s book Unconditional Love – How to Live with an Open Heart in a Changing World:

A young seeker goes to see a spiritual master, who was once known for having amazing psychic powers. The young man asks the spiritual master if he still uses his psychic powers, and the master replies… “Nah, I gave all that up 20 years ago… since then I have focused on exploring the Unconditional Love which sources this Universe… and you know, in all that time, I haven’t found the bottom of it… Unconditional Love goes on and on… It’s infinite and eternal… and in this lifetime, I don’t think I will ever exhaust exploring it”.

Each of these… although from different directions… point to one of the problems with starting to walk the spiritual path…

Which is… the problem of size.

Or put another way… most people’s inability to deal with the true size and perspective of our Universe.

You see, we exist in a Universe which is, as Douglas Adams states, big… really, really BIG… infinite and eternal…

It just goes on, and on… and even if there is a boundary… there is always the question of what is on the other side?

But in comparison, human beings are small… and limited… we pop into existence for a brief moment… we get to stare up at the night sky, and observe the bigness of it all for 70 to 80 years (if we are lucky)… and then we are gone… we blink out to who knows where…

And the question of whether there is an after-life or not… well, that’s just another big unanswerable question… the question of the undiscovered country as Shakespeare put it.

But the majority of human beings can only ever get through their lives by ignoring how big the Universe is…

And yes, we come up with religious systems and myths… and scientific truths to explain how things work and came about… and a lot of these religious and scientific truths help to explain things, and ease the existential angst to some extent…

But on the spiritual path, they can actually get in the way.

On the authentic spiritual path you need to start paying serious attention to perspective, and the true size of the Universe around you.

Why?

Because as you progress on the spiritual path, really progress… you start to encounter states of being which don’t make easy, convenient sense to your rational mind…

You start to encounter states of being which are truly BIG… and like the spiritual master states… are infinite, eternal and so inexhaustible

And if you, as an individual, feel uncomfortable with this fact, and engage in the normal human practice of trying to shrink things down to size, then you are not actually progressing on the spiritual path.

To be honest, that’s what a lot of popular religious / New Age stuff is really about… exercises in down-scaling… yes, there is an element of truth there, but it is down-sized to a human perspective, and so a great deal is lost in the translation.

The thing is…

The Universe is loving… but it isn’t human… human is a form… one form out of many possible… which our consciousness takes on during a lifetime…

So while in a human body, and walking a spiritual path, at times we need to step beyond the limitations of the human form to resonate with the larger energies of the Universe.

According to the Toltec Path, one of the Meso-American spiritual paths, a point comes when you need to allow your consciousness to step beyond being human… although that doesn’t mean you become less then human in doing so… or that you can’t come back again to being human and so interact with other human beings… and pay your taxes, or go shopping for groceries…

But what it does mean is that if you try to view the rest of the Universe through the filter of the human perspective you will miss out on 99% of the stuff going on out thereup therein here

So the more you look upwards, the more you need to let-go of the human filter… and learn to up-size your consciousness.

And our language doesn’t help here either.

If we can put something into words, we believe we understand it.

But as Lao Tsu famously said at the start of the Tao Te Ching… “The Tao which can be spoken is not the eternal Tao“.

The Universe slips through the fingers of our language, time and time and time again.

Take Love for example… especially Unconditional Love

The majority of human cultures have down-sized Love as being something which occurs between two human beings, between a mother and child, between two lovers… but poets down through the ages have wrestled with their inability to truly capture the experience of Love in words.

And beyond that, many spiritual masters state that Love / Unconditional Love is the foundation note for this Universe…

And if that is the case, then Love is very, very BIG indeed…

It was there at the moment of the Big Bang… and before… and it stretches from one side of our Infinite Universe to the other…

And it will be a common experience for any creature, living on any planet, through this immense Universe of ours…

So right now, there may be a sentient creature, living on a planet, on the others side of our Milky Way Galaxy, trying to write a love sonnet…

And they will be experiencing the same Love wavelength that touches your Heart…

And this will be true for any creature, living on any planet, in any solar system, in any of the trillion odd galaxies which astronomers believe fill our Universe… which may be only one Universe of many in a much wider Multiverse…

So to answer the original question behind this post… what is a Universal Frequency?

The answer is that it is a Frequency which spans our Universe, such as Love… but there are others, such as Gratitude, Grace, and Peace

That it is a Frequency which is infinitely larger then our human ability to understand and comprehend.

But it is a Frequency which, if we choose to resonate with it, can lift us up, and take us on a journey which will last a whole lifetime… and beyond.
