The Catch-22 Situation With Your Unconscious Mind…

In our last post, I said that there was / is a Catch-22 situation when working with your Unconscious Mind… and this is often the BIGGEST block which we need to overcome… when working to turn things around…

And this block… which is HUGE for some people… has an external and internal expression.

It goes something like this…

Your Unconscious Mind believes virtually everything the Conscious Mind says…

Which is why the Conscious Mind needs to be very careful in what it says and thinks… because the Unconscious Mind is always there, listening… acting on what the Conscious Mind wants and believes.

But… the Catch-22 situation… is

Who gave those thoughts to the Conscious Mind in the first place?

Yes, the Unconscious Mind does… or did…

That’s the Catch-22 situation…

Maybe an analogy will help here.

When someone has an upset stomach, has caught a stomach bug, the advice is to carefully wash your hands… especially after going to the toilet… because if the stomach bug is passing through your digestive system… you don’t want it to exit below, jump on to your hands, and then as you next feed yourself, it pops back into your mouth, and goes around your digestive tract for the second… or third time…

This is often referred to as self-contamination… where your own actions… or lack of them… is causing the condition to remain in your system for longer then is necessary.

OK… not the most pleasant of metaphors… but it is very apt here, I believe…

Because when it comes to negative beliefs… we are often involved and trapped in a similar mental self-contamination loop… until we decide to break it.

Because our negative thoughts and beliefs do circulate… they do go around and around our energy system… and from our internal world, out to our external world, and then back inside again.

The Unconscious Mind passes them up to the Conscious Mind… which thinks them…

And then because the Conscious Mind didn’t contradict those thoughts in anyway… the Unconscious Mind goes…

The Conscious Mind didn’t contradict that thought… accepted it… so that must be what we still believe… better treat that thought / belief as truth… as Gospel… and store it safely for the future…

So the Unconscious Mind continues to retain that negative thought / belief as high-priority… and will continue to activate it whenever a similar situation occurs…

Until that particular mental cycle is broken… and the negative thought / belief is cancelled out by the Conscious Mind in some way.

That’s one of the reasons why I believe the NLP crowd is correct… that we create our reality moment-to-moment… and that its not just about digging down to find one all important limiting belief…

It’s also about choosing to re-create our world differently… by choosing to pass more positive thoughts through this mental feedback loop.

The other element we need to consider in relation to this process… emotions and feelings… because whenever the Unconscious Mind loads a thought up into our Conscious Mind… it also has to upload any emotions and feelings which are attached to that thought… so that we can think and feel at the same time…

And one final thing… which is very important… but came about through my own meditations etc, so not able to  prove 100% at this point… but I think it does make a lot of sense… and more importantly… it works.

There is an intermediary stage when it comes to this mental upload process… which is linked to the hypnogogic state, which people experience most often when falling asleep, or just on the verge of waking up…

So the Unconscious Mind keeps those thoughts which are most likely to be needed by the Conscious Mind in a state which is close to consciousness… but not fully in consciousness…

Bit like how a web browser stores your most visited sites in its memory… to make your online life easier… and so speed up your future online searches.

So all the thoughts… which we use most often… instead of having to recall them from deep, long-term memory storage… the Unconscious Mind keeps them on constant stand-by… close to the Conscious Mind… for when they are needed…

Doing this is a lot quicker… and requires less energy… and the Unconscious Mind always prefers options which use minimal energy…

So these are the thoughts which the Conscious Mind thinks a lot… or which influence the thinking of the Conscious Mind a lot… such as our attitudes and values… thoughts which influence other thoughts… even if we don’t always think them directly each time they are triggered…

So these thoughts, and associated emotions, are kept in a state of semi-consciousness… just below the Conscious Mind… in the same way that a computer has a hard memory drive… but stores programs it is using in RAM… to make processing a lot easier and more efficient.

Although one serious drawback to this intermediary level… the Unconscious Mind will prefer to use a thought already in semi-consciousness, rather then pulling in a thought from deep memory-storage… one which has been put on ice… reviving those thoughts takes longer, and uses up a lot more energy… so the Unconscious Mind prefers to offer up thought options from the known and active list… rather then engage in original, blue sky thinking… which is less energy-efficient.

Unless the Conscious Mind intervenes, and requests its mental horizon be expanded… that it be presented with other thought options… but more on that later.

There is much more to our thinking then you might initially think.

But this whole mental cycle is one which we don’t often want to think about… because it really does challenge our belief that we are independent creatures… that we think our own thoughts… that no one is pulling our strings.

Because we often don’t want to consider how much of our Conscious thought is controlled by our Unconscious mental processing

And why does this situation arise anyway?

Basically, it comes about due to a design flaw… a design limitation perhaps… arising from how we Humans are designed and put together.

The Conscious Mind can process 40 bytes of information per second… while the Unconscious Mind can process 20,000,000 according to scientific research.

Which means that ALL our data processing sits on the side of the Unconscious Mind… and the Conscious Mind does, or can do, very little in this… or any other area…

The Conscious Mind is TOTALLY dependent on the Unconscious Mind.

Our Unconscious Mind is the super-computer which runs the entire Internet… while our Conscious Mind is the 1970s pocket calculator in comparison.

But it also means… the Conscious Mind has no data storage capacity at all

It is therefore totally dependent on the Unconscious Mind to serve up memories… along with all thoughts and beliefs… and feelings and emotions… while reminding us constantly of our life-attitudes and core-values.

The Conscious Mind can store nothing… has no memory… and so our view of the world and how it works, and how we relate to it… that is all stored on the Unconscious side.

So the way it works…

The Conscious Mind is in a situation… maybe through being in an external situation, a conversation with someone perhaps… where it needs to recall its belief about money… or maybe it is just reflecting on an area of its life.

So the Unconscious Mind… who is very much like a prompter, sat at side of the stage, feeding lines to the actors… and so keeping a constant and continual eye on what is happening… goes:

Our belief about money is that it is the root of all evil… we don’t like it… and we don’t like accepting or handling it.”

And the Conscious Mind takes this Unconscious prompt, responds to the external situation… saying something like:

I am sorry… but I don’t feel comfortable in accepting your job offer for an extra $5,000 a year… it doesn’t sit or feel right… but thank you for thinking of me.”

But the totally weird thing… because most Conscious Minds are 99.9% totally focused out there… focused on their external life, and not very aware of their inner world… they never develop the awareness… the inner sensitivity… required to hear that Unconscious voice… off-stage… behind the scenes… which is feeding it lines… influencing it’s behavior… its thoughts… its words… it’s actions…

And if you never develop that awareness… then you never get to respond with:

I don’t want to say that… or do that… No, I am going to respond in a completely different way.”

Which is what the genuine Spiritual Masters have been saying all along, really… down through the ages… the inner actor needs to expand their inner repertoire… and stop living mechanically… just listening to the inner prompter.

The more conscious we can become of the inner processes and contents of our Mind

The more we can choose what and who we are…

The more we can choose what we express… both internally and externally.

The Conscious Mind cannot expand its limit of 40 bytes processing… that’s hard-wired… but it can expand its own consciousness… becoming more conscious of what is going on… even down into the Unconscious levels.

That’s what spiritual growth is really all about… all the way up to enlightenment.

Because, thing is folks, mechanism and consciousness are not the same thing… thank goodness… although they may appear to be from a certain perspective… especially if your Ghost is definitely lost in the Machine.

And here comes the other Good News… especially for anyone struggling… there is a mental loop-hole… which can be used to help make us re-create our mental space better… and become a lot more comfortable…

Remember what we said about an intermediary state… just below the Conscious Mind… where the Unconscious Mind uploads all those thoughts / feelings which the Conscious Mind uses a lot?

And remember what we said about the mental feedback loop… where the Unconscious Mind is continually feeding… even prompting… the Conscious Mind with thoughts… emotions… and assuming that those thoughts are still high-priority if the Conscious Mind accepts and thinks them… and doesn’t reject them?

Well… instead of removing negative thoughts completely… which can be an intricate and complex process for some people… and is generally more time consuming…

Why doesn’t the Conscious Mind just give a simple command to the Unconscious Mind… stating…

Don’t upload any thoughts about <insert your issue here> into the Conscious or semi-Conscious Mind.

That’s it.

Clear out your inner memory storage buffer… and keep it clear of the negativity and limitation… and the low vibe emotions which come with those thoughts.

Buy some time, while you are working towards deleting the negative thoughts completely… pulling them up from the root.

Simple really.

Breaks the mental feed-back loop… and also means the associated emotions don’t get activated as well… so there can be a sizable degree of emotional relief too…

And when we come on to our post about the Issue Tower, we will discover the other great advantage of this approach… because you are not dismantling anything… it remains intact internally… (or maybe, that should be internally intact)… even if rendered silent… then you don’t have to worry about priority issues… but more about all that later.

OK, the negative thoughts are still down there in the Unconscious Mind… they haven’t gone away… but the more the Conscious Mind can move into a more positive state and expression… the more freedom it acquires… and the more mental control it achieves.

Win / win.

And sometimes… it’s really all about the mental relief one feels… the release of the constant pressure in your Mind… being able to think a new thought… not being trapped in a depressing and low vibe feeling.

So… is it really possible to do this?

To put an effective block on certain negative thoughts?

You betcha!
