Mirrors… See-Saws… & Crosses

Now, many people have heard about the inner phenomenon known as psychic projection… it is one of the BIG concepts in psychology… and also in New Age thought too… and it also goes under the name of psychological projection

According to the website Everyday Health:

Psychological projection is a defense mechanism people subconsciously employ in order to cope with difficult feelings or emotions. Psychological projection involves projecting undesirable feelings or emotions onto someone else, rather than admitting to or dealing with the unwanted feelings.

Put simply… if you have a big bag of anger / hate within you… (or some other emotion or quality you consider toxic, and don’t want to deal with)… and you have pushed it deep down inside, so that you are no longer aware of it, so you don’t have to deal with it… then the energy does not just disappear… it cannot… it has to go somewhere…

And so you project the anger / hate out onto other people… so you find people who make you angry… you find people who you can hate…

And to rationalize these feelings, you discover reasons why they make you angry, you come up with reasons why you hate them with such intensity…

The trigger may be big… it may be small…

“I so hate it when they tap their pen on their teeth… makes me boil over with anger… !!!”

But that external person becomes the outlet for your own deeply buried feelings.

Now… you may end-up hating more then one person… you may decide to project out onto whole Groups of people… and if these bigger projections can become part of our culture… projections can literally be passed down across the centuries, even millennia. from generation to generation…

The history of the Middle East teaches us that unfortunate fact…

The classic case of Group psychic projection was Nazi Germany, who took all the hate and ugliness within themselves, and projected those feelings out on to the unfortunate Jewish people… (plus HomosexualsGypsies… anyone who was born Eastern European)… who the Nazis perceived as being lower and deformed… thus allowing the Germanic people to embrace a perfect image of themselves, as the beautiful and perfect and superior Aryan race.

The Nazis of the 1930s were some of the ugliest people going… but they projected all their inner ugliness out on to other people… people they could hate and act against… thus maintaining their illusion of inner purity and superiority.

And down through the ages, politicians and dictators have been doing the same… finding Groups to hate, and look down on, in order to make their chosen people feel special.

And… if you have ever watched the classic Sci-Fi movie Forbidden Planet, you will know that the story revolves around psychic projection…

An advanced alien civilization develops a planet-size machine which gives them Godlike powers, fulfilling their every thought and desire… but the machine destroys them, once it is switched on, because of the anger and hate which is locked deep within their Unconscious Minds, which is all suddenly unleashed, projected out and given physical form as a raging monster which cannot be stopped, as soon as the all-powerful machine is activated… Monsters from the Id, as they say in the movie.

And that’s the problem with projections… if they remain unaddresed, and unexplored, then they will continue to warp and distort someone’s life… because they will always find a way to the surface… even if an unexpected form… or at an unwelcome time.

But if they do work their way to the surface… if they do explode on to someone or something… then one thing you can definitely say…

You won’t be in control… and you will be the eventual loser… at some stage down the path of your life… when all those buried psychic forces are finally unleashed.

Which… for some… occurs at the end of their life… as death approaches… as they grow weaker… and no longer have the energy and inner strength left to suppress all the buried psychic material…

That’s why I think some people are afraid of death… it’s not always about the actual death and dying part… the unknown country and what lies beyond… but the fact that they are being re-united with all that they have spent their life running from… the buried psychic projections… which is often why surrounding a dying person with Unconditional Love can be such a blessing… because it helps to raise them up above their inner fears… (and that’s what I did when my own father passed over, and it helped tremendously)…

And we need to acknowledge that psychic projections can involve the bad stuff we don’t want to face… such as anger, hate, fear and anxiety…

But also… projections can involve the good stuff too… creativity, love, self-worth… this can also be defined as dangerous and unacceptable for some reason…

But whatever… good or bad… it involves a small child who realizes / believes that they cannot exist within their family / tribe while still feeling that feeling…

“Mother won’t love me if I show my anger… so I must push it deep down inside…”

“Father won’t love me if I am more creative then he is… so I must dumb it down, and never allow my creativity to surpass his own… I must always be second-best… second-smart…”

Or something like that… and we Humans are able to come up with a million variations on the same few emotional themes… and I haven’t even mentioned how different cultures and societies provide another layer of distortion… and how small kids need to suppress all that in order to fit in…

So we hide these unwanted feelings deep within ourselves…

And believe that by doing so, we will be acceptable to others, and we will be able to live our lives unquestioned or called out by others.

But… as C J Jung used to say… the unexamined life is not worth living.

Because you are not living with a full Heart… you are hiding a part of yourself… so you are not whole or authentic within… which is where it ultimately counts…

The final prize of a life lived well… that you were more whole inside at the end of life then when you started.

And when you suppress a part of yourself… your core energy… a part of your true Heart… you are always the loser in the end… because you become less whole.

But unfortunately, once you hide one part of yourself… it becomes easier and easier to hide other unacceptable parts… in order to fit in… (remember, and this is important, your Soul doesn’t care about fitting in… not ever… only about being whole and authentic).

But fortunately… the process of projection… where the suppressed energy is projected out on to others… can also be an opportunity to show us what we are running from… and so heal and bring ourselves back into wholeness…

If we have the eyes to look… and ears to listen… that is.

So the outer is reflecting back to us what we are running away from inside… that is the magic projection formula.

A good image for projection is mirrors

And mirrors do crop up in a kinds of myths, fairy-tales… and also in movies.

Because reflection is a brilliant metaphor for projection…

For example, in Harry Potter and the Philosophers StoneHarry is shown a mirror which can show him the reflection of whatever he desires… but Dumbledore warns him not to visit this mirror too often… as people have wasted their whole lives looking and longing for what they are shown in the mirror… their deepest Heart’s desire.

And as with a lot of J K Rowling, there is a real psychological truth being expressed here…

Many people do waste their lives, chasing an external dream… when the real magic was buried within them… and all they needed to do was turn around… 180 degrees… and look within…

They were chasing their own projections…

But there is something else we need to understand about projections…

How they are perfectly balanced inside and out…

And to understand that that, we need to bring in a second metaphor… that of the see-saw

But a see-saw… as in our main image… which is perfectly balanced… so that neither side is tipping down or up…

A see-saw that is completely flat and level…

Because that is what our projections need to be… to be successful… perfectly balanced… within and without.

Because as soon as they become unbalanced, the projection mechanism is disrupted, we become aware of the mechanism… and the pain… the inner, emotional pain… which is what we are trying to hide… to escape.

A projection can only work… so that it doesn’t cause us any emotional pain… and we can suppress that which we do not want to face… if the see-saw remains perfectly flat and level… perfectly balanced…

And while it is perfectly flat and level… we can remain totally oblivious to the inner issue… and totally fixated upon the external projection… the person or people we are projecting our stuff on to…

And so we feel no inner pain… we are blind to it… while the projection process continues…

Which is what is meant to happen…

But while we remain in this state of perfect see-saw balance… there is no chance that we can become healed… become whole within… no chance that we can grow and transform…

While the projection process continues… our pain is stifled at best… but it is never sorted,.. it never becomes healed…

So the Catch-22 situation is… until we do become aware of our pain, can feel it, and things become imbalanced inside… and the see-saw starts to tip one way or the other… we cannot become aware of what is going on within us… and we can never become healed and whole.

While the see-saw is flat… the whole projection process just keeps on going.

When the see-saw starts to tip… then we have a chance at healing and wholeness… because things are brought to the surface…

So… odd thing… we can only truly heal within when we are ready to end the projection game, and so step into our own pain… so that it can become finally healed.

Let explain all that with an example…

Let us say I had a big financial debt… out there… in the real world…

A big, black hole of debt… (although we could have gone for an example revolving around love and the desperate need for a soul-mate… works the same…)

Now, in projection terms… a big, black hole out there… is and must be a projection of a big, black hole within.

But… because the see-saw is perfectly balanced around this issue… I am not aware of that fact… and so continue to look outwards, rather then inwards…

Totally focused on the external financial debt… instead of being aware there is also a big hole of emptiness within.

Now, let us assume, that something happens, causing the financial debt to be reduced / shifted in some way…

Which would be a good thing…

But…

This would cause the see-saw to go up / down… to become imbalanced… and as soon as that happens… the inner black hole springs into life…

And suddenly the hidden, inner hurt and pain comes rushing back into our consciousness…

Which is not a good thing… because it hurts…

But is also a brilliant thing… because we are now also aware of the black hole within ourselves… and can so start the process of healing it… (if we want, that is)…

Now, the problem for most people who are suffering with the BIG issue out there is two-fold…

Problem One… they are looking out, and not looking within… so they cannot see that their external problems are really a projection of the blockage within…

Problem Two… even if they do become aware of this inner / outer relationship… they are too afraid of the pain which will arise if the see-saw becomes imbalanced… that they go through their life, careful not to upset the internal / external balancing act… and so the situation continues to… continue…

But the thing is… until you upset the see-saw… and throw the whole energy situation into total imbalance… you can’t heal and fix things… both within and without…

Weird thing is… you need to step out of balance… to heal within… to come back into balance… although a new and more positive balance…

Which brings us to our final image / metaphor for this post… the cross.

Now, we are used to the cross from Christian iconography… the cross on which Jesus was crucified… and what the cross represents… the promise of resurrection…

But… the image of the cross is much more ancient then that…

And it’s meaning in Ancient History… was that each Human individual is the interaction of two lines and forces…

The vertical line represents the line of incarnation… of our Soul coming down from above, incarnating on the Earth plane, to explore the Earth plane… and then rising once again back to Spirit…

The horizontal line represents the line of manifestation… of expression… that we are here to expressing out our love and other vibrations to the world… and allow ourselves to feel and experience what this world has to offer…

So a line flowing up and down… crossing over… a line flowing out and in…

Unfortunately… suppressed psychic projections seriously distort both of those lines…

The vertical

The horizontal

So that energy can no longer easily flow within and without… flow up and down…

But for those who can work those two lines… who understand and can work the cross… it is far easier to bring healing and love to our lost and suppressed aspects then you might at first believe…

Because it is just a flow of energy… healing energy…

But flowing in the right directions… that’s the important part…

More on this soon…

Namaste 🙂
