Krishna &… the Sattvic Mind

In traditional / ancient Indian spiritual philosophy there is a concept known as the 3 Gunas

Tamas, Rajas and Sattva

… But what exactly are these 3 Gunas?

Well… according to Wikipedia:

Guna (Sanskrit) depending on the context means ‘string, thread or strand’, or ‘virtue, merit, excellence’, or ‘quality, peculiarity, attribute, property’.

The concept originated in Samkhya philosophy, but is now a key concept in various schools of Hindu philosophy. There are three gunas, according to this worldview, that have always been and continue to be present in all things and beings in the world. These three gunas are called: sattva (goodness, constructive, harmonious), rajas (passion, active, confused), and tamas (darkness, destructive, chaotic). All of these three gunas are present in everyone and everything, it is the proportion that is different, according to Hindu worldview. The interplay of these gunas defines the character of someone or something, of nature and determines the progress of life.

However, I tend to explain it in a different way… and from a different direction entirely…

Shining a Torch on Life

Just assume that your consciousness (or rather the consciousness which pours through your emotions, mind and physical systems… which are really just vehicles for your consciousness)…

OK… let’s assume that your consciousness is like a battery hand-held torch, which you can point in any direction you want…

And as you stand in a darkened room, and point it in a certain direction, the light from the torch illuminates whatever it touches…

The bookcase maybe, or the television set, or the armchair, or maybe the table…

Whatever the light falls upon is illuminated… and is literally brought into consciousness… brought into your awareness.

And anything which is outside the beam of this torch is held in a state of unconsciousness… it still exists, but it is out of view in the darkness.

So whatever you focus the torch on is illuminated, enhanced, made conscious.

Let us next assume that it is possible to also shine the torch on intangibles as well as tangible things.

You can literally shine the torch on to ideas and feelings just as easily as you can on physical objects… which is exactly what is happening within the room of your mind… the contents of your mind, the ideas and emotions are being illuminated by an internal torch of consciousness… so that you can be aware of them, so that you can work with them.

Without this internal torch illuminating the contents of your mind… personal evolution of any kind would be impossible.

And let us go one stage further… Let us assume you can also focus this inner light on your states of being

Which is exactly what is occurring when we talk about the 3 Gunas

When the torch of consciousness is focused on stillness and inactivity… when consciousness enhances and expands that state… it is known as Tamas

When the torch of consciousness is focused on motion and activity… when consciousness enhances and expands that state… it is known as Rajas

When the torch of consciousness is focused on beingness itself… when consciousness enhances and expands that state… it is known as Sattva

And as we have said, the key element with the light of consciousness, is it not only illuminates what it touches… it also expands and enhances it…

So you literally become what you are most conscious of…

And that’s how I usually explain the 3 Gunas

To draw upon Native American wisdom tradition… you become whatever wolf you feed within… and you feed your inner wolves with your light of consciousness.

But we can literally take this a stage further… using our light & torch analogy…

The Two Possibilities

Imagine that you sat on a chair, holding this hand-torch… and you are shining it on the table… and the beam illuminates whatever is placed on the table…

If the beam remains fixed and unmoving… and you want to focus the beam on something different… then you must literally replace the object on the table with something new…

But there is a different approach entirely… which is… ?

You learn to point the torch in an entirely different direction… away from what you want to darken… towards something else you want to illuminate… which is located in a different part of the room…

And fundamentally, those are the two options available to any spiritual journeyman

Option 1: While holding the consciousness torch steady… you learn to empty the mind of the stuff which you don’t want to illuminate, and replace it with ideas and feelings which you do… all within the container of your mind.

Option 2: You learn to move the torch of consciousness towards those things which you do want to illuminate…. and away from anything which you don’t.

In Option 1 the torch is fixed… and in Option 2 the torch is fluid.

In Option 1 consciousness is fixed… and in Option 2 consciousness is fluid.

All valid spiritual approaches… which aim to move beyond the separate self towards a larger and universal reality… are faced with only these two approaches / options.

90% of religions have gone for Option 1… because it is the more straightforward in many ways, easier to explain.

But Option 2 is indeed possible… and is actually quickerif you know howif you know the trick of it.

Personal Explorations

Below are 2 Audio Essences to help you play with the experience Sattva, the peace of beingness… and you will find included in these AEs extra vibrations which are the 1st stage of learning how to shift the direction of your consciousness torch… (don’t worry, it will click back again once the Audio Essence is complete).

We have also included the Audio Satsang for Krishna, who was an absolute master are playing with the Gunas, and directing the torch of consciousness.

So have a play… see what you discover… and believe us… this is only the first steps into a whole new ocean

Note: Actually, there is a 4th Guna in the more esoteric branches of Indian philosophy… Gunititas… or consciousness enfolded into consciousness… where consciousness becomes its own subject & object… like 2 mirrors facing one another.

And if you have a positive experience through listening to this Audio Essence, if it has taken you into a deeper and more expansive experience of your own inner being… then remember, you can come back to this webpage anytime in the future, anytime you want / need to repeat this same process. It’s that simple. This webpage provides you with a simple route into that natural feeling of joy and expansion within.

Practical Suggestions on Use:

  • The more conscious attention that you can give to an Audio Essence, the deeper and more fulfilling your experience will be. It is possible to receive the benefits of an Audio Essencewhile listening to it in the background, but the more time and conscious focus you can devote to it, the more fulfillment you will gain from the experience.
  • It is strongly advised that you do not listen to an Audio Essence while driving or performing tasks which require your undivided attention.
  • Many people have found that listening to an Audio Essence using headphones greatly enhances their experience… although if you do not have headphones or earplugs, listening to it played on your computer, laptop, tablet or mobile phone will still prove equally as effective.
  • The effectiveness of an Audio Essence is not dependent on the particular volume it is played at, in fact, it can be set at the minimum volume level where it is still audible to the listener and it will still be effective. When using an Audio Essence, therefore, select the volume level which is most comfortable for your experience at that time.
  • If your internet connection is slow, it may be better to allow the Audio Essence to fully download on to your webpage first before you start to listen. To attempt to listen while it is still downloading may mean the Audio Essence pauses, and this may interrupt and disturb your experience.
