Energy Astrology – Venus

To continue this tour of our inner Energy Astrology solar system… next in line… Venus… 2nd planet from the Sun.

In Energy Astrology terms, Venus = the Throat Chakra… which is the 4th primary Chakra… which is the centre for our ability to communicate and create…

Over the next 7 days, we will be posting different views of Venus… but from an Energy Astrology perspective… to help people see this most fascinating of planetary bodies in a new and deeper way… using the planet to better understand the chakra… and the chakra to better understand the planet.

NOTE: And for the next 7 days… each day… I will be adding a new section to that page… so that as the week enfolds, we deepen our understanding of Venus and how it works through our individual energy system. Updating the Energy Astrology FB page each time a new section has been updated.

PART ONE – VENUS & BEAUTY

Now, to start Part One of our exploration of Venus… just going to remind people of two very popular sayings.

The first one:

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

The second one… which is also key to the whole approach of Astrology.

As above, so below.

And both of them are very relevant when we come to discuss and explore Venus… in terms of a physical planet… and in terms of Energy Astrology…

You see, in Traditional Astrology, Venus was known as the Morning Star in many cultures around the world… and was considered to be one of the most graceful and beautiful planets in the sky, because Venus is the second brightest object in the night’s sky, after the Moon… and it has always had a degree of mysteriousness attached.

It orbits close to the Sun… and so is best seen either in the early morning, at Sunrise… or at Sunset… periods of transition for our own planet… going from night to day… day to night.

But these are also times when the human individual observing is also changing their perspective… their consciousness… from sleep to waking… from waking to sleep… and I think that very twilight / borderline state of consciousness… when the human eyes which beheld the bright Morning / Evening Star in the heavens were more open to natural beauty… has gone a long to way to shaping how people have traditionally seen Venus.

If the Moon is associated with sleeping consciousness… then I would associate Venus with the hypnogogic state… the state of consciousness between waking and sleep… and also with Lucid Dreaming (but more on that later in the week).

And so being the most beautiful planet in the heavens… it also came to represent beauty down on Earth.

All pretty easy really… As above, so below.

But then, mankind started to send probes into space, and in 1962, the NASA sent Mariner 2 in a fly-by of the planet, and it transmitted back to Earth information about its temperature and atmosphere, and then the former Soviet Union landed a probe, named Venera 7, in 1970.

And what did they find?

That Venus is much more equivalent to Hell then it is to a Heavenly paradise.

The temperature is 475 degrees Centigrade, making it the hottest planet in the solar system… the atmospheric pressure is equivalent to 900 metres below sea level… and it has densest atmosphere of all the inner planets… composed of 94% carbon dioxide… along with clouds of sulfuric acid.

It is believed that Venus is the result of greenhouse gases building up over time, and over-cooking the atmosphere.

Space probes which reach the surface only transmit data back for a short period of time, before being crushed and corroded, and ceasing to function.

So doesn’t that presents us with a problem?

Venus, the planet of beauty is one of the most corrosive and inhospitable places in our Solar System.

As above, so below?

So how do you we square this circle… what does the Janus Face of Venus tells us from an Energy Astrology perspective?

What exactly is beautiful about Venus?

Well, to understand that… we need to bring our Throat Chakra into the equation… because in Energy Astrology, Venus is equated with our Throat Chakra.

Now, one of the aspects of the Throat Chakra in the Sanskrit tradition is purity… and the ability to create purity.

And, within our human culture, we find two different approaches to purity.

One… the purity like the Vestal Virgins in Ancient Rome, who were virgins who were required to remain so… pure and chaste throughout their lives (under pain of a long and slow death if they were to ever fall… back then, those Ancient Romans took their purity very seriously)…

So in this approach… you are born with purity… but it can be lost and corrupted… so you need to be vigilant… and follow a certain path… keep to a certain life-style… in order to remain pure.

But the other approach… purity can be obtained through some kind of alchemical… or chemical… process… where purity is obtained and maintained through removing impurities…

So you can never fall back into impurity again… because you always know how to make yourself pure moment to moment… and interesting… this is something which is mentioned in some Ancient meditation practices… the ability to remove impurities from Consciousness to remain untouched by the world.

And the Throat Chakra is associated with both of these… its vibe can reconnect us with a pure, inner vibrational state…

But if you know how to use it, it can help us to separate out the low vibes, the impurities from our life… from our energy field… thus bringing us back to a state of purity and inner harmony.

So the odd thing is… when you look at it that way… Venus is the most Alchemical planet in the Solar System.

And if you DO look at it that way… then the surface of Venus is exactly like the transformational furnaces depicted in wood block drawings by Medieval Alchemists… which depicts intense heat + violent processes in order to create the Philosophers Stone.

Also, in Ancient Greek mythology… Venus was not the most peaceful and tranquil of the Gods on Olympus… the Goddess had a temper… many undesirable personality traits… and was one of the key players behind the Trojan War. Nothing peaceful about any of that.

And yet… when a mortal man was in her presence… all that fell away… none of that mattered… all the ugliness of their earthly life was banished for a time… in her presence, the world was transformed.

So maybe… it is really a matter of perspective…

Venus is the planet best associated with beauty and purity…

Not because it is the most beautiful and harmonious planet in the Solar System… (although if you are fire-proof and prefer breathing sulfuric acid… and have a body of solid granite… then worth considering as your next holiday destination).

But because it best represents the intense Alchemical process which a person needs to go through to obtain and maintain a sense of inner beauty and harmony.

And what is a Human being if not a constant work in progress… transforming beyond Earthly impurities… back to our Heavenly Soul home… (and maybe we do need a bit of sulphuric acid, to help burn off all those Earthly impurities while on the road back Soul home).

PART TWO – VENUS & SELF-WORTH

Something I love, and always find interesting is those little inconsistencies… that if you follow-up… can lead to a new way of looking at the world.

For example… here’s another one in relation to Venus.

For a long-time, I have read in Traditional Astrology books that Venus = Self-Worth… that if Mars is the Sun’s Warrior, and will fight for what the Sun needs in life… then Venus is the Sun’s Charmer, and will use it’s social skills to achieve what the Sun needs…

To prosper in life, your personality needs both a Warrior and a Diplomat.

In life, you need someone who is happy to kick the door down to get what it needs… and someone who says sorry, and that you will pay for the damage later…

Mars and Venus are you inner pair of super-heroes… with different skills and vastly different approaches to life…

Which is good… no problem with any of that…

But then… if you go across to the modern psychological thought on Self-Worth… say the Psychology of Happiness (Martin Seligman)… and track that across to Astrology… then it is more likely that the Moon and the Sun are involved… and so they would seem to be more active in the whole Self-Worth thing.

So how does Venus fit into the picture?

But then… perhaps Self-Worth is a much more complex process then would first appear…

Let’s see… let’s return to basics and work forwards… and see what we find.

So the first thing is that, as I always say, Self-Worth is a Doing thing… unlike Self-Love which is a Being thing.

To achieve a good degree of Self-Worth, you have to go out and do something… which in Astrological terms means you are going to pull in several planets, just as you will need to use yours legs + feet + arms + hands + eyes + ears + mouth to venture out into the world and triumph etc…

Because of this… it is highly unlikely that the whole of Self-Worth can be pinned to one single planet… there must be a few aspects of Self-Worth which belong to one planet… but then several planets combine their specialties to create the whole experience / process.

So Self-Worth is gained / built-up whenever you step outside your Comfort Zone, you face and overcome your anxieties, you triumph, you acquire new skills… and I have already written quite a bit on the dynamics of Comfort Zones, such as http://vibrationaldoorways.com/knowing-your-energetic-comfort-zone/

Basically, in Astrology… the Moon equates to our comfort zone… our family, tribe, culture, society, existing skill-set… whatever makes us feel psychologically safe… while the Sun is the force… the inner Hero… who is easily bored… and want’s to go off on a adventure.

He is Luke Skywalker, at the start of the very first Star Wars film (A New Hope), working on his uncle’s moisture farm on Tatooine, dreaming of being a star pilot and having adventures among the stars…

The psychologist Mihaly Csikzentmihalyi, who has done a lot of research over the decades on the Psychology of Happiness and the experience of Flow, states that the best way to step out of your comfort zone is to go to the edge, and expand it slowly over time…

If you step out too far, too quickly, then you are overcome by a sudden tsunami of anxiety… and just haven’t built up the necessary skills to succeed… and so crash and burn… and any optimism / excitement you have built up about your adventure will have been extinguished, making any future attempts harder. If you fail too many times… then eventually you stop trying…

So not impossible for a few rare people… maybe Moon in Aries types… but for most people… it’s a high risk strategy, trying to surf a wave that is just too big for your current skill level.

A much better approach… go to the edge of your comfort zone, step out a little… build your skills over time… keep the anxiety under control… expand your comfort zone as you go… and eventually you will get to surf those real big waves you always dreamed about.

Otherwise known as… don’t bite off more then you can chew.

Also known as… don’t step too far outside your comfort zone if you can’t handle that level of high anxiety… (yes, I did just make that one up).

So our Moon = our existing comfort zone, which can be safe, but also boring… while the Sun = the force which compels people to expand and grow, and try and become something new…

So if that is the case… then on the edge of your comfort zone… on the line… I would place… Mercury, Venus and Mars…

And so… depending on how someone’s personality is wired… whether they are programmed to look out or in…

The 3 Inner planets can be used to help someone step out of their comfort zone…

… Or keep them imprisoned within…

But let’s be optimistic at this point… let’s assume that an individual is wired for success in their head, predisposed to go on an adventure…

If that is the case…

Mars is the planet responsible for marshaling all the courage and strength to step out of their comfort zone…

Mercury is the planet responsible for mastering all the information necessary to step of their comfort zone…

And finally… last but not least…

Venus is the planet responsible for building all the practical skills, and social connections, to step out of their comfort zone…

Now, all 3 planets are needed… but often, in human society, it is the ability to master skills… and successfully navigate social situations, which determines if someone is going to be successful or not in life…

Which means a BIG dose of Venus is needed.

There was a social study, completed about 15 years ago now I believe, which showed that your average middle class kids grew up to be more successful then your average lower class kids… partly because they knew how to play the social game… they had a better grasp of social niceties…

When they went into the bank manager, to get a loan for their new start-up company, they would know to be differential when needed… when to press home their advantage when required…

And this is why I think Venus has come to be associated with Self-Worth… because we are human beings, living in highly complex societies, with masses of social interaction…

Individual Success is hugely dependent on good / adequate social skills…

If we lived alone in the middle of Alaska, where brute strength and determination was more important to success and survival… then maybe Mars, the warrior, would be the most Self-Worth worthy planet in the playground…

But most people don’t live that way… we live in sophisticated and intricate social settings… where the ability to communicate… to correctly read other people… to have excellent social skills… is one of the main indicators of success in life.

Yep… Venus is in her element here.

So if all that is necessary to achieve and maintain Self-Worth… we so need a good, strong and healthy Venus in our lives.

More coming tomorrow.

PART THREE – VENUS & LUCID DREAMING

If you ever get to hang out with any Tibetan High Lamas, learning the art of Lucid Dreaming, then you will discover that they are very hot on the Throat Chakra…

And to understand why… we need to first explore and understand what happens to our Consciousness when we sleep…

It is believed within many spiritual / energy systems, found around the world, that during our waking hours the centre of our Consciousness rests within the Brow chakra… looking out at the world… so our Consciousness can observe and engage with the external world…

Then when we start to sleep, we let-go of this external directed focus, and we start to turn within, our centre of Consciousness starts a journey along and down from the Brow chakra… down to the Heart chakra… our inner-most core… our inner foundation…

It is believed that when it touches the Heart, it also touches the essential core / foundation of our Being, and re-connects fully with our Soul…

And as it resides in the Heart, that is also when we fully re-charge from Source, in a state of deep, dreamless sleep…

But between the Brow and the Heart, each night, our centre of Consciousness also spends some time at the Throat chakra… which in Energy Astrology is associated with the planet Venus… and during this stage of our nightly progress… this is when / where we dream.

This is why I believe that, alongside Neptune, Venus also has input into our Imaginative function… because when we dream we re-imagine ourselves and our world… we can step into different realities… we play… we re-imagine…

Neptune allows us to dream unlimited… but Venus is linked to the dreaming function / mechanism… to our ability to dream at all.

The question is… when our Consciousness is located in the Throat Chakra…

Are we fully conscious of our dreams, a process otherwise known as Lucid Dreaming…

Or are we unconscious… so things happen to us, we have no conscious control over our actions… and only vaguely remember what happened during the dream… if at all?

( But then… that begs the question… how many of us are fully conscious during our waking hours? )

When Consciousness itself is located at the Brow chakra, our imagination is tied down by the external world to a great extent… but when it drops down into the Throat chakra, our imagination becomes almost limitless… and the only limits it does encounter come from what is contained within our Unconscious Mind (i.e. limiting beliefs).

If you have poor self-esteem when you are awake… no surprise, you will also have poor self-esteem in your dreams… UNTIL you let go of those limiting beliefs about yourself.

Which is why Lucid Dreaming is such a great personal development space, if you can achieve it, because it allows us to step out of the Earth plane situation… and re-imagine it within our Imagination very quickly and effortlessly… challenging our limiting beliefs and replacing them.

Now, to understand this whole Lucid Dreaming thing… and the importance of Venus to the process… we need to understand that Venus / Throat chakra sits half-way between the world of form, the waking state at the Brow chakra… and the world of the formless, which resides in the Heart…

So Venus is the planet associated with playing with form… with the ability to re-imagine your life… to explore new possibilities…

Which is kind of fitting really… because Venus herself was born on the island of Cyprus, emerging out of the sea foam… and in a sense she gave birth to herself… (although which a little help from the castrated testicles of Saturn… which were flung into the sea by Kid Jupiter… but that’s for another time / planetary post)…

So Venus literally comes out of the sea in Ancient Greek myth… out of oceanic consciousness.

And lying between the Heart and the Brow chakra… between the formless and form… in Energy Astrology, Venus / Throat chakra contains the idea-patterns… the belief-shapes… from which our Earth plane life is built… Venus literally holds the blueprint of our Earthly existence.

Venus gives shape and voice to the infinite ocean that is being expressed through us… our individual expression and form.

And in Energy Astrology, the planet Venus lies between the formless (Heart / Sun)… and the world of form (Brow / Uranus).

Venus is linked to our ability to create forms, which hopefully serve our needs and life-purpose (if we are acting consciously)… or which follow our unconscious drives / desires… if we are not… which means we are trapped by the world we create… rather then having some kind of control.

So what does that tell us?

Well, to understand that… let’s revisit the process of Lucid Dreaming.

Why do people want to Lucid Dream?

Either to have fun… or to grow / expand spiritually.

Now, according to Sanaya Roman’s guide Orin, the Earth plane is a plane of frozen thought… and so it takes time / energy to unfreeze some form, so that it can uniform and re-form into something new…

So the ability to shift up a level, to a level which is less fixed, and much, much more fluid… such as the one found at the Throat chakra… means we can play with changing forms… trying on… trying out… new situations… new versions of ourselves… which then should filter down to influence us… literally, update us… and we can do all that, much more easily and freely then on the Earth plane, where things are much more stuck and tied down.

In his excellent book, Lucid Dreaming: Gateway to the Inner Self, Robert Waggoner… who has himself been Lucid Dreaming since a young age… says that hopefully after the period of using Lucid Dreaming to satisfy any and every desire you have… a time comes when, you start to get curious… start to use Lucid Dreaming to explore your inner consciousness…

You start to use Lucid Dreaming as a kind of night-time meditation practice… which is how those Tibetan Lamas use it.

And because time / form is more fluid at the level of the Throat chakra… you can play with your issues / your reality in a way which you just cannot on the physical level.

So if we stand back and look at all this… what is happening at the Throat chakra, while we sleep, we can now see that…

Venus is the space within which our Consciousness can dream…

AND… Venus is also the mental constructs from which we build our life and sense of self.

It is the Cine film passing through the projector, and the Cinema project itself, through which our Sun’s light shines… casting out our particular movie into / onto the world.

Dreams of continuing mental imprisonment… or dreams of freedom and self-development… your choice.

But whatever you choose… either way, patterns which then filter down to form the foundation of our Earth plane existence, give it shape and form.

Therefore… the Sign in which our Natal Venus is located also goes a long way to showing us the organizing pattern within our sense of self… our personality…

Important: So this begs the question, why bother with the Earth plane, if you can accelerate your spiritual growth via Lucid Dreaming via the Throat chakra?

Well… I think the answer is that at the Throat chakra everything you experience is mostly a mirror of yourself, an aspect of your energy, which you can control… because it all resides inside your Soul’s Imagination.

But when you step out on the Earth plane… you lose that… and you start to encounter other incarnate Soul’s who you cannot control… or manipulate with your mind… and so you have to learn to live with, accept, and co-operate with them… and there is a great learning of Unconditional Love to be had in that… along with massive amounts of pain and suffering along the way admittedly.

But your Soul thinks it’s worth it… which is why it turns up, again and again, life-time after life-time.

More coming tomorrow.
