Energy Astrology – The 12 Energy Archetypes

Once upon a time, Gautama the Buddha used to say… Truth is that which works.

Not… Truth is that which we think should work… or… Truth is that which makes the most sense to our consensual view of reality

No… Truth is that which works

Which also fits with that famous saying from Sherlock Holmes… via Conan Doyle.

Once you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, no matter how improbable, must be the truth.”

And if it works as well… win-win.

So… with that in mind…

That we might be venturing into some new and totally unexplored areas here…

I will now attempt to explain, to the best of my ability… the 12 Energy Archetypes of Energy Astrology… and why they work… because they most certainly do.

And to do so, we need to begin in a very unlikely place…

The Chinese I Ching… otherwise known as The Book of Changes… an oracle which is 3,000 to 4,000 years old… possibly older… and which arose out of the wisdom and energy understanding of Chinese and Central Asian Shamanism.

For those who don’t know… the I Ching is made up of 64 Hexagrams… each of which describes one of the foundational energy stages of our Universe

And how each of these 64 energy states is continually changing from one to another…

In fact, the way each Hexagram is constructed allows it to transform into any of the remaining 63 Hexagrams… or energy states… just through one line switching from Yang to Yin say… as in this diagram… where Hexagram 42 changes to Hexagram 24 just through the two upper lines switching from Yang to Yin.

So how does the system work?

Well… each of the 64 Hexagrams is created from 8 Trigrams… and each of these 8 Trigrams is built of 3 lines… which represent either Yin (broken line) or Yang (unbroken).

By simply changing one of more of these lines… you can change each Trigram into one of the other seven…

And by so doing… change the Hexagram itself.

So in our diagram… Hexagram 42 (Increase)… which is composed of the Trigrams for Wind over Thunder… changes into Hexagram 24 (Return – The Turning Point)… which is now composed on the Trigrams for Earth over Thunder… just through the upper two lines changing from Yang to Yin.

In the I Ching any Trigram can change into any other Trigram… any Hexagram can change into any other Hexagram.

It is the essence of Heraclitus’ famous saying… “You can’t step into the same river twice“… because the only Universal constant is change… and the I Ching is indeed a map of change… The Book of Changes.

No wonder people have been fascinated by the I Ching for 4 Millennia… and it is also the basis for much of Chinese Esoteric Philosophy and energy working.

But what is most interesting for us… from an Energy Astrology perspective… is how the Ancient Shamans derived the meaning of each Hexagram.

Because each Trigram is linked to an Elemental forceHeaven, Earth, Fire, Water, Mountain, Wind / Wood, Lake, and Thunder… which together make up what is called The Bagua… which is also used in systems such as Feng Shui… and certain Internal Martial Arts.

So lets take two main Hexagrams… Hexagram 11 = The Creative where Earth is above Heaven

And Hexagram 12 = Standstill where Heaven is above Earth

If you look at the direction / interaction of the Heaven & Earth Trigrams in the following diagram:

In Hexagram 11, the Heaven Trigram is descending, while the Earth Trigram below is ascending… hence they can interact… touch… connect… pass through each other… and that interaction creates new life…

However, in Hexagram 11, the Heaven Trigram is ascending, while the Earth Trigram below is descending… hence they cannot interact… because they never meet… they are moving apart… and so… energetic stagnation

In both cases… and in fact in all of the 64 Hexagrams of the I Ching… the meaning of the Hexagram is derived from the howthe way in which… the 2 Trigrams interactinter-relate… or don’t…

So one Trigram is above… one Trigram is below

One is ascending… one is descending

And this is the case with all the of 64 Hexagrams of the I Ching

The interaction between the 2 Trigrams create the overall meaning of the Hexagram.

Their meaning was derived…  probably by Ancient Shamans in mediation… or chewing on interesting leaves and roots… plus observing nature in great detail… and so working out the energy / situation which arose when each of the 8 Trigrams interacted… the 8 Elemental / Universal energies

And from this… these interactions… they set down the meaning of each of the 64 Hexagrams

Such as… Hexagram 63After CompletionWater over Fire

Or Hexagram 47Oppression / ExhaustionLake over Water

Or Hexagram 32DurationThunder over Wind / Wood

Or Hexagram 55AbundanceThunder over Fire

And that’s basically how the I Ching works

So the next obvious question must be…

What has any of that got to do with Energy Astrology?

OK… let me explain.

So… in Astrology there are 12 Signs

Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius… and… Pisces…

And… in the Western tradition… each of these 12 signs is associated with 1 of 4 ElementsFire, Earth, Air, and Water

And each Element is assigned 3 Astrological Signs, giving us:

  • Fire = Aries, Leo, Sagittarius
  • Earth = Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn
  • Air = Gemini, Libra, Aquarius
  • Water = Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces

Note: For the moment, parking the whole Cardinal-Fixed-Mutable dimension thing, because that takes us in a slightly different direction… although it is relevant… but needs to be discussed in a different and future post… ditto the whole Yin-Yang classification thing.

Now… where were we?

Oh… yes… it is possible to assign each of the 12 Astrological Signs to 1 of the 4 Western Elements.

But wait a minute…

And this is where Energy Astrology kicks in…

Each of the 12 Astrological Signs also relates to 1 of the 12 Meridians

And each of the 12 Meridians… relates to 1 of the 5 Elements in  the Chinese system… which gives us a different classification entirely…

  • WOOD = Gemini / Liver meridian, Capricorn / Gallbladder meridian
  • FIRE = Taurus / Triple Warmer meridian, Leo / Heart meridian, Libra / Heart Protector meridian, Pisces / Small Intestine meridian
  • EARTH = Cancer / Stomach meridian, Sagittarius / Spleen meridian
  • METAL = Virgo / Large Intestine meridian, Aquarius / Lung meridian
  • WATER = Aries / Kidney meridian, Scorpio / Bladder meridian

Note: This part of Energy Astrology is built upon the work of the great German Astrologer, Gerhard Ebertein… who established the link between the 12 Astrological Signs and the 12 Meridians.

So… stopping a moment to catch our breath…

It is possible to classify each of the 12 Astrological Signs… through their association with a meridian… with 1 of the 5 Elements in the Chinese system

But then… doesn’t this then give us different Elemental associations for each of the Astrological Signs?

Yes… it does…

So… each Astrological Sign has both a Western Element correspondence… and also a Chinese Element correspondence

And… then… going even further…

The Big Idea coming up now…

We can treat each of those Element correspondencesWestern and Chineseas if they were 2 Trigrams… forming almost a Hexagram… for each Astrological Sign

With the Chinese Element above… and the Western Element below

And just like those Ancient Shamans millennia ago… we can explore how those 2 Trigram Elements interact within that Energy Hexagram / Astrological Sign

And… also…

The interaction of those 2 Trigram Elements will go to the core of what that Astrological Sign is all about… what it wantswhat it needswhat it is expressing

Don’t worry if this is doing your head in… there will be a diagram coming up soon to help to explain it.

This… finally… gives us…

  • ARIES = Kidney Meridian = Water into Fire = Spirit into Spirit
  • TAURUS = Triple Warmer Meridian = Fire into Earth = Physical Beauty
  • GEMINI = Liver Meridian = Wood into Air = Energizing the Mind
  • CANCER = Stomach Meridian = Earth into Water = Grounding Emotions
  • LEO = Heart Meridian = Fire into Fire = Spiritual Beauty
  • VIRGO = Large Intestine Meridian = Metal into Earth = Refining the Physical
  • LIBRA = Heart Protector Meridian = Fire into Air = Mental Beauty
  • SCORPIO = Bladder Meridian = Water into Water = Spirit into Emotions
  • SAGITTARIUS = Spleen Meridian = Earth into Fire = Grounding Spirit
  • CAPRICORN = Gallbladder Meridian = Wood into Earth = Energizing the Physical
  • AQUARIUS = Lung Meridian = Metal into Air  = Refining the Mind
  • PISCES = Small Intestine Meridian = Fire into Water = Emotional Beauty

And those are the 12 Elemental Archetypes of Astrology.

I have put all this information in the following chart to make it clearer to picture in your mind’s eye – using the Chinese 5 Element element / color associations on the top row… and the Western element / color associations on the bottom row:

And… the really amazing and wyrd thing is… they really do go to the heart of what each Astrological Sign is all about…

How the upper and lower Element interacts shows what each Astrological Sign wants and needs… capturing and expressing both its positive and negatives.

As we shall explore in future posts… going into each of the 12 Astrological Signs in much greater detail… to explain what this all means on a Sign by Sign basis.

So we will explore why Scorpio… with Water over Water… really is the most Watery Sign going

Why Pisces… with Fire over Water… tends to be in desperate need of a Soul-Mate… or some way of making their world beautiful

And why Capricorn has all this energy to put the world right… even if it means climbing a mountain… or founding the next business empire… or both

Hang on a minute.. when I said finally… that might have been a little premature…

Because there is something else…

Because for each of the 12 Astrological Elemental Archetypes, there is also a Crystal Layout… which helps you to directly plug into the energy of a particular Astrological Signto help fulfill its energetic needs

Which can make life a lot less troublesome… believe me…

Like giving a small children it’s favorite food, helping to mellow out its temper tantrum… and the favorite food is also nutritionally beneficial too… once again… win-win

So… Energy Astrology is not just a mind-thing… where you just read lots and lots of books, and fill-up your neurons with information… it is also a very practical approach… because it gives you ways to directly tune into the energies at work in our Universe… and which are being processed through your own Natal chart

And… just so you know… this stuff really does work.
