Aquarius & Intolerance… (& Changing the World)

You can understand the deeper nature of Aquarius through understanding the weave which connects the following dates:

1997… and I am in a relationship with a Soul-mate who is Uber-Aquarian… and I find myself saying… “What do you mean I am getting emotional again… and I should calm down and be rational… What’s so wrong with having emotions? I am not Mr Spock from Star Trek, you know!

1600Giordano Bruno is being led out in Rome, about to be burnt at the stake, by the Catholic Inquisition, for his heresy of believing that all the stars in the sky are also suns with their own planetary systems. His tongue has been bound so that he cannot spread any further heresy as he dies amidst the flames.

1939Adolf Hitler and his chief architect Alfred Speer are in a vast room, with map tables, and miniature models of the cities and buildings they will build across Eastern Europe, once it has been conquered by the armies of the Third Reich.

There is an Aquarian thread woven throughout all of those events… along with…

1483Eisleben, Germany, a friar called Martin Luther nails a proclamation to the wooden door of the cathedral (the Ninety-Five Theses against the financially lucrative indulgences)… and all hell breaks loose across Europe soon after.

You see Aquarius often gets a bad press for being emotionally remote… which they can be…

But there are times, when change is desperately needed, but being blocked by powerful vested forces…

And the only one who can say what needs to be said, who is fearless enough to speak the forbidden truth… is the cool and remote Aquarian.

… Let me explain.

OK, the German astrologer Reinhold Ebertin originally made the connection between Aquarius and the Lung meridian, and this link allows us to make a further link, drawing upon the work of the kinesiologist, John Diamond, because in his energy system / approach the Lung meridian is linked to the positive quality of Tolerance, and the negative quality of Intolerance

And if I may… throwing in the Elemental Archetype for Aquarius from Energy AstrologyRefining the Mind.

So first… let us define the meaning of Tolerance….

The ability or willingness to tolerate the existence of opinions or behaviour that one dislikes or disagrees with.

Which raises really quite an interesting dilemma…

For example, I like Star Wars… my friend likes Star Trek… but I am prepared to tolerate his likes, just as he is prepared to tolerate mine… we literally don’t go to war over our differences of opinion.

Without tolerance, human civilization would not be possible.

However… during the life of a society, and human history, there are times when we need to tolerate something… and other times when intolerance is the better option, and the need to kick out something which isn’t working… or is just plain wrong and cruel… becomes paramount.

If a point hadn’t come when society could no longer tolerate slavery, or the disenfranchisement of women, then the world would be a very different place.

The phrase… I can no longer tolerate that kind of behavior… is not necessarily the wrong thing to say… depending upon context…

Human history often takes a turn in the right direction when an individual or group takes a stand and says… I can no longer tolerate this, things need to change!

So I would argue that tolerance / intolerance are equally right… and equally wrong… and it all depends on the context in which you and the society around you finds itself.

An Aquarian, on a good day, is finely tuned and knows the difference (but on a bad day… as we shall see… completely wide of the mark).

And if you look back through history, the majority of the great social reformers have been touched by Aquarius / Uranus in some way… this is no longer acceptable… we can no longer tolerate this… things much change, and we’re not going away until it does…

An Aquarius is finely-tuned to the subtle sea changes in society before they occur…

It’s as if each Uber-Aquarian is someone from 20 to 30 years in the future, but having to live now, trying to tell us there is a better way.

Which then takes us to the next stage in our discussion.

In his book The Wisdom of Psychopaths, the psychologist Kevin Dutton argues that psychopaths do have a good side… and can be quite useful to have around the human house.

Now, culturally, we tend to associate psychopaths all as unfeeling serial killers… but in reality there are degrees of the psychopathic… and most psychopaths tend to go into big business, or politics, climbing the greasy pole to get to the top (and without much of a conscience, or emotional baggage to tie them down, they tend to do well at this… because they tend to allow nothing to limit them).

Don’t worry, I am not about to argue that Aquarians are psychopaths… even if they are the one Zodiac sign least likely to give you a great big bear hug on your birthday… but if there is a spectrum of emotionality (made-up word, I know)… then Cancer will be on one extreme… with Aquarius on the other.

But Dutton argues that from an evolutionary point of view, humanity producing the odd psychopath with each new generation, is actually a huge advantage.

Who you going to call, when there’s a saber-tooth tiger terrorizing the village… who you gonna call… your tribal psychopath!

Because in a dangerous situation… the person who doesn’t easily feel fear, doesn’t get over emotional… and can play it cool… has a distinct advantage…

There are times when being able to switch off your emotions is a distinct advantage… and this is something which Aquarius can do to some degree… either switch them off, or tone them down.

And that’s exactly the type of person you need to speak the unspoken truth within a business… a family… or society at large.

1600Giordano Bruno went to stake with his tongue bound because he was not afraid to speak the truth as he saw it (and it turns out he was right all along)… during his life, even when the Catholic Church did everything in its power to silence him, his need to speak the truth was all-important.

All that fear waged against him… and yet he didn’t let it silence him… his truth was more important.

1483Eisleben, Germany, a friar called Martin Luther nails a proclamation to the wooden door of the cathedral…

… Would Luther have gone ahead, with hammer and nail, if he was totally fixated on what would happen if the Pope got his hands on him?

The Big Powers tend to stay in power, and get away with injustice, because they frighten the average citizen into silence… speak out and we’ll burn you alive, prosecute you, put you in prison, persecute you and your family until you fade away to nothing… we have all the power, you have none… be very, very afraid…

And for 11 signs in the Zodiac that tends to work.

But there is one sign which replies, saying… “I don’t frighten that easily… and I will speak the truth regardless of what you try to do… or even do… to me…

Any ideas of who that Zodiac sign might be? … Yes… you’re right…

Aquarius

And they keep on going… relentless… fearless…

Until the slaves are freed… and women are given the vote… and the truth is known… and the injustice is righted.

But now we arrive at the big Aquarian fault… intolerance of an injustice is a good thing… but there are times when intolerance is also plain wrong… and when a lack of emotion prevents an Aquarian from caring

1939Adolf Hitler and his chief architect Alfred Speer are in a vast room, with map tables, and miniature models of the cities and buildings they will build across Eastern Europe, once it has been conquered by the armies of the Third Reich.

But the thing was, there were people already living in those locations… in the cities and towns which would have been bulldozed to make Hitler’s dream a reality… and millions of people would have been transported to Siberia.

On the dark side of Aquarius… a beautiful idea often counts far more then emotions, counts far more then human emotions and suffering…

If he had ever continued in power, and won the war, Hitler would have just marked it down as collateral damage… and a price worth paying for all those towering pillars of gleaming marble all across Eastern Europe.

As I sometimes say… Aquarius… loves humanity… but doesn’t always like sitting next to someone on the train.

On a good day, Aquarius understands what should and should not be tolerated… but on a bad day, when it’s judgement is off, and its moral compass is misaligned, it tolerates the bad… and is intolerant of the good… (and it won’t be told, it doesn’t want to hear that its judgement is off).

And if you are ever a relationship with a Soul-mate who is Uber-Aquarian… you might find the following line useful… “What do you mean I am getting emotional again… and I should calm down and be rational… What’s so wrong with having emotions? I am not Mr Spock from Star Trek, you know!

Fortunately… for all your Crystal people out there, the following is a real help to all those Aquarius people weighed down by Intolerance:
